In 2014, France legalized same-sex marriage, but that did not settle all issues of equality for queer couples. Now legally married, Céline and Nadia are expecting their first child. No one–friends, family, or the government–can deny that Nadia will be their child’s mother. But Céline will have to prove to the government that she’s worthy to adopt her own child and become a legal mother.
With only three months until the due date, Celine must reach out to friends and family for letters of support for her adoption. While the couple is happy to ask for support from some friends, others are more difficult, including their families. Reuniting with her estranged mother brings up insecurities and resentment in Céline. Love Letters shows the parts of parenthood no one wants to talk about–the insecurities, the jealousy, the doubt–while celebrating the joys of marriage, love, and facing the world together. In her debut feature, Alice Douard treats this complex subject with sensitivity and grace.

In this personal documentary, the filmmaker travels to Thunder Bay, Ontario seeking a connection to the city that might have been hers, had her mother not been banished to Ottawa as a pregnant teenager, and coerced to relinquish her for adoption.
