Talented writer-director Chandler Levack’s greatly anticipated follow up to 2022’s marvelous comedy I Like Movies (opening night film at IFFO 2023), Mile End Kicks is a spirited, sexy, and entertaining semi-autobiographical tale of aspiring music critic Grace Pine, who moves one summer in the early 2010s from her native Toronto to Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood’s hip music scene. Living in the ‘hood that produced bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Arcade Fire, to name a few, Grace finds herself captivated and distracted by the cultural richness of Montreal. The actual reason for her move is that she’s been commissioned to write a book on Alanis Morissette’s classic 1995 album of female empowerment, Jagged Little Pill, but meeting the deadlines for that assignment become more and more challenging as she falls in and out of love with the local indie scene as well as with a few musicians. Over the course of the summer she also starts to recognize her increasing scepticism and disillusionment about the very male-dominated world of music journalism. Part romantic comedy, part getting-of-wisdom story, Mile End Kicks features Levack’s typically sparkling dialogue and a brilliant performance by Barbie Ferreira (Bob Trevino Likes It) as Grace.
