Katie Boland’s We’re All In This Together, based on the novel by Amy Jones, is a raucous drama set in the Parker family home in Thunder Bay over a period of four tumultuous days. Not only did she write and direct the film, Boland also manages to deliver double acting duty, playing both identical twin sisters Finn and Nicki Parker. The film follows Finn, an estranged sibling who returns home from Toronto after her mentally ill mother Kate (in an astonishing performance by Martha Burns) rides a barrel down a local waterfall, bringing unwanted public attention to the family. Kate survives, but the act causes a bit of a scandal for the Parkers. Once back home, Finn struggles to restore order to the dysfunctional family along with her highly-strung, volatile twin sister Nicki, with whom she does not get along, as well as with her younger sister Paris, who is going through her own confusions of adolescence. Just how will these oddball Parker family members deal with their pasts, the present crisis with their mother, and their possible futures? The answers will surprise, entertain, and move you in this lively and inventive debut feature by the multi-talented Katie Boland.
