Schedule

10am - 11am EDT: Hometown heroes with kurt smeaton

Former Ottawan Kurt Smeaton dishes on his career as an Emmy-winning producer, whose writing credits include Schitt’s Creek, Kim’s Convenience, The Beaverton, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and creator of this year’s Children Ruin Everything. Hear about Kurt’s career development, his writing hacks, industry insights, and inspirations, and maybe a few jokes.

Kurt will be joined on the virtual stage by Ottawa-based director, writer, producer Christopher Redmond.

12pm - 1pm EDT: CMF’S 10TH EDITION OF THE KEY TRENDS REPORT: Snapshot of NOW > Spotlight on NEXT

Presented by the Canada Media Fund

The recently published 2022 Report, WHERE NO SCREEN HAS GONE BEFORE > Charting a course to the future of media, addresses essential questions and challenges likely to impact Canada’s screen-based industry in the future, while searching for clues about what’s likely here to stay and what’s next. This one-hour though-provoking session with Catherine Mathys, the CMF’s Director of Industry and Market Trends, tailored for the IFFO audience, will be presented in three-parts:

  • Audiences of today: What are the current trends in viewing habits?

  • Hybrid is now: What are the “shifts” in content production?

  • Skills of tomorrow: What skills will be needed to adapt to the transformation expected in the industry?

Sharing these insights with delegates of the IFFO Screen Summit is intended to SPARK the conversation about what our industry will look like in ten years, while triggering action to build the future we want for Ottawa and Canada’s audiovisual sector.

1pm - 3pm EDT: One-on-Ones

IFFO Screen Summit provides an opportunity for broadcasters, veteran producers, and young talent to share ideas, network, and collaborate on making top-shelf Canadian content.

Our 1:1 virtual meeting sessions at this year’s Screen Summit give you the chance to privately pitch your idea in an inclusive environment that is both supportive and evaluative. Frontline broadcast and development executives from the CBC, Blue Ant Media, APTN, Warner Brothers, and others, will be online to offer advice - and hopefully start a connection that will last into the future! Just remember, these meetings are short but sweet - so come prepared and be sure to find the right executives for your project.

Don’t have a specific project to pitch? You can still book meetings with other attendees to build your network and meet future collaborators.

Meeting requests open on March 7 at 9:00 AM (EDT).

3pm - 4pm EdT: creator talk: sort of

Presented by the Canada Media Fund

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the hit CBC dramedy, Sort Of!

Creators Fab Filippo and Bilal Baig will tell us about their approach to comedy and storytelling, how they secured funding and developed Sort Of for CBC (the complete first season of Sort Of is now streaming on CBC Gem), reflect on the good and not-so-good about shooting in Toronto, and reveal what inspired them to make this refreshing new series.

Fab and Bilal will be joined on the virtual stage by Mel Woods, Culture Editor at Xtra Magazine.
