Thirteen years old, motherless, and full of angst, Sammy (the titular Black Hole) finds herself an unwilling magician's assistant to (the titular Marvelous) Margot and then, a very willing and eager magician’s apprentice. Forced by her father into a small business summer class at the local college (the alternative being a camp she mentally compares to military training), Sammy covers up her attempt to skip class by using unsuspecting Margot as her business mentor. Though she denies her interest in Margot’s tricks at first, she’s soon begging to be let into Margot’s exclusive salon of performers, mastering card tricks, and disappearing behind smoke bombs instead of attending class. At home, Sammy refuses to acknowledge her Dad’s new girlfriend or talk about her grief over losing her mother only a year ago, preferring to turn to Margot (played by Rhea Pearlman) for advice and comfort. The film itself feels like a rebellious teen with its bright colourful cinematography delighting your eyes, cuts to overdramatic imagined scenes, and just the right song playing at just the right time to really get you. An impressive performance by young star Miya Cech grounds the film in both the tense, emotional scenes and the joyous moments creating an absolutely marvelous cinematic experience.
