Written and directed by Iranian filmmakers Maryam Moqadam and Behtash Sanaeeha, Ballad of a White Cow is a poetic and contemplative film centering on a widow and her battle for justice.
Moqadam and Sanaeeha spent nine years researching and developing the story of a wrongly executed man, whose innocence is realized posthumously. The familiar narrative to many in Iran veers away from a weak and victimized female lead, rather offering a glimpse into the strength single women, let alone single-mothers face in a misogynistic society. Ballad of a White Cow is beautifully quiet with long takes that linger and build suspense, feeding unpredictable and uncomfortable twists. As the story unfolds, the film explores themes of injustice, anguish, deceit, and regret.
