An ongoing and key part of IFFO’s celebration of Canadian and world cinema is its one-day annual conference, SAVE AS, dedicated to examining issues of preservation, restoration, distribution, and exhibition of the always-endangered world cinema heritage. SAVE AS consists of expert panel discussions, case studies of restored cinema classics, and premiere screenings of those restored classic films. At IFFO, we are committed to cinema’s past as well as its present and future.
In its inaugural edition, SAVE AS 2022 showcased the publication of New Light on Canadian Heritage Film, a first-of-its-kind study offering an overview of the network of players involved in the conservation, dissemination and promotion of Canadian heritage cinema. Focusing on activity in Canada and France, the event attracted a vibrant cross-section of Canadian and international film archivists, distributors, exhibitors, and streaming services such as Arbelos Films, Cannes Classics, Janus Films, the Criterion Channel, Éléphant : mémoire du cinéma québécois, the National Film Board, and Library and Archives Canada.
With the support of Telefilm Canada, SAVE AS continues to grow by creating a forum and raising awareness of the urgency and importance of preserving, restoring, distributing, and exhibiting film classics.
Taking place at the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) on March 9 during the two-week run of the International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO), the conference’s 2023 international focus is African cinema. At the event, African cinema scholar Professor Aboubakar Sanogo will lead a panel discussion on the efforts being made to restore, preserve, and disseminate the classics of African cinema.
To highlight Canadian cinema restoration efforts, SAVE AS 2023 welcomes award-winning filmmaker Patricia Rozema to present a case study of the 4K restoration of her iconic film When Night is Falling (1995), commissioned by Encore+ and Telefilm Canada in 2022. SAVE AS 2023 is honoured to be presenting the World Premiere of the newly restored version of the film, with the filmmaker in attendance, on the evening of March 9 at 7:00 PM at the OAG.
In addition, SAVE AS 2023 presents a case study of Guy Maddin’s Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988). Award-winning director Ron Mann will discuss the process behind the new 4K version that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. As a part of IFFO, the restored Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988) will be screened on March 18 at the Mayfair Theatre with Maddin in attendance for a Q&A.

What are the outlines of this ‘ground up’ approach to the archiving, restoring, and exhibiting processes and how can these practitioners inform and even help shape potential future public sector/government policy frameworks?

A reflection on the actions underway to expand the spectrum of archival processes, with a view toward integrating meaningfully and disseminating and exhibiting historically marginalized works. This panel will also interrogate the colonial structures and attitudes that have shaped the idea of ‘the archives’ and highlight the work being done now to make that idea and its institutions more responsive and inclusive.

Une partie clé de la célébration de l’IFFO du cinéma canadien et international, est sa conférence annuelle d’une journée, SAVE AS, dévouée à l’examen des questions de la préservation, la restauration, la distribution et l’exposition du patrimoine cinématographique mondial toujours menacé. SAVE AS est composé de discussions par panel avec des spécialistes, d’études de cas sur des classiques du cinéma restaurés et des premières publiques de ces films classiques restaurés. À l’IFFO, nous tenons à cœur le passé du cinéma ainsi que son présent et futur.
Lors de son édition inaugurale, SAVE AS 2022 a présenté la publication de Lumière sur le cinéma de patrimoine canadien, une étude inédite offrant un aperçu du réseau d'acteurs impliqués dans la conservation, la diffusion et la promotion du cinéma patrimonial canadien. Axé sur l'activité au Canada et en France, l'événement a attiré un large éventail d'archivistes, de distributeurs, d'exploitants et de services de diffusion canadiens et internationaux tels que Arbelos Films, Cannes Classics, Janus Films, Criterion Channel, Éléphant : mémoire du cinéma québécois, l'Office national du film et Bibliothèque et Archives Canada.
Avec le soutien de Téléfilm Canada, SAVE AS poursuit sa croissance en créant un forum et en sensibilisant le public à l'urgence et à l'importance de préserver, restaurer, distribuer et exposer les classiques du cinéma.
La conférence, qui se déroule à la Galerie d'art d'Ottawa (GAO) le 9 mars, pendant les deux semaines du Festival international du film d'Ottawa (FIFO), aura pour thème international 2023 le cinéma africain. Lors de cet événement, le professeur Aboubakar Sanogo, spécialiste du cinéma africain, animera une table ronde sur les efforts déployés pour restaurer, préserver et diffuser les classiques du cinéma africain.
Pour souligner les efforts de restauration du cinéma canadien, SAVE AS 2023 accueille la cinéaste primée Patricia Rozema pour présenter une étude de cas de la restauration 4K de son film emblématique Quand tombe la nuit (1995), commandée par Encore+ et Téléfilm Canada en 2022. SAVE AS 2023 a l'honneur de présenter la première mondiale de la version nouvellement restaurée du film, en présence de la cinéaste, le soir du 9 mars à 19h00 à l'OAG.
En outre, SAVE AS 2023 présente une étude de cas du film Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988) de Guy Maddin. Le réalisateur primé Ron Mann discutera du processus derrière la nouvelle version 4K qui a fait ses débuts au Festival international du film de Toronto en 2022.
